T wo seats don’t make a sports car and that was evident with the 1955 Thunderbird. While its performance and handling weren’t stellar, although a few were raced, the Thunderbird was a luxury ride, with a dash of sportiness.
Capable of more than 100 mph, but not much more, it would get you where you were going in handsome and leisurely fashion – not everyone was hurried enough to want a faster or more muscular car.
There was nothing brutish about the Thunderbird, which is why it appealed to men and women, alike, and managed to outsell the Corvette in its first year. In later years, the ’55 Thunderbird would be unrecognizable compared to its larger and less inspiring successors. –LS
