1967 Shelby Mustang GT-500

Ford’s largest engines found their way into Shelby Mustangs in 1967, making the Shelby GT-500 one of the most soulful and powerful of all models inspired by the man himself. Unlike the GT-350 model, which was introduced in 1965 and boasted 306 horsepower, the 1967 GT-500 screamed 360 horses and was enveloped in a dramatic fastback body that looked incredibly quick even when standing still.

Factory options, including air conditioning and power steering, were introduced in ’67 as the Shelby GT became less of a race car and more of a grand tourer. But the GT-500, thankfully, helped keep the muscle and automotive expressionism alive.

Making good use of Ford’s “Police Interceptor” engine, the 428 cubic inch power plant was equipped with two 600 cfm Holley carburetors on a medium-rise aluminum intake manifold, which produced gobs of torque, and a guaranteed smile on the person driving it. A number of these cars also were equipped with automatic transmissions, which took away only a little from the Shelby Mustang’s appeal.

Because of the limited number of Shelby GT-500s produced, they command a hefty dollar. On the other hand, plenty of nicely done Shelby clones are being offered. Do your homework so you know the difference. -Larry Sanata
