S ure, Ferrari automobiles were built prior to the 1950s but why would you want one, wonders Mike Sheehan, a Ferrari collector, historian and racer, as well as broker.

If you’re looking for the quintessential Ferrari, the car that made Ferrari a household name and turned on countless automobile enthusiasts around the globe, it’s the 250 GT series built in the 1950s.

In their heyday, this series of Ferrari, which includes the Europa GT, Boano and Ellena, represented the most powerful, most desirable and coolest sports cars in the world. The production of these cars also represented a “huge, quantum, massive leap forward” for the Italian automobile manufacturer, says Sheehan.

Earlier cars built by Ferrari were, well poop, he insists.

“The only reason they were successful was because Ferrari stuffed a V12 engine in them when everybody else had a four-cylinder.”

That all changed, however, with the introduction of the Ferrari 250 GTs, which included vastly improved front and rear suspensions, bigger brakes and synchromesh transmissions. As a result, “they became much better and more improved cars,” Sheehan says.

Even today, they represent an incredible investment, both in terms of sheer driving delight and market value. Prices for these cars continue to escalate, making them a wise Ferrari investment.

While most of the newer sports cars being built today are likely to be faster, these ‘50s Ferraris continue to score high on the adrenaline-pumping chart.

And for those wanting more pizzazz, a growing number of these cars are finding their way onto vintage race courses across the globe, competing with European exotica from roughly the same era.

The Europa GT, which was introduced in 1954, was the first Ferrari 250 GT road car. Powered by a compact and powerful V-12 fed by three twin-choke Weber carburetors, it produced about 220 horsepower, which is not a whole lot in today’s automotive world. With the help of a fully synchronized transmission, it took a little over seven seconds to go from zero to 60 mph, and that was an impressive accomplishment a half-century ago.

The Europa GT was replaced by the 250 GT Pinin Farina couple, which later became the Boano after Pinin Farina decided it could not produce as many cars as Ferrari would like. By 1956, Carrozzeria Boana began building the newest in the 250 GT series.

Not surprisingly, the Boano coachbuilders added some of their own touches to the Pinin Farina design, which eventually led to a more user-friendly automobile. Power again came from a V12, but with the help of a few modifications horsepower grew 220 to 240.

In 1957, Mario Boano left for Fiat, leaving the Boano auto works to his son and son-in-law. The name of the latter, Ezio Ellena, would be remembered by Ferrari aficionados forever.

The Ellena was built until mid-1958.
