FERRARI TESTAROSSA

Designed by legendary Italian vehicle builder Pininfarina to replace the popular Ferrari 512 BB, the Testarossa (Italian for redhead, so named for the vehicle's red cylinder heads) is among the most recognizable and desirable supercars of the 1980s. It went on to capture the hearts and minds of folks around the globe while starring on the TV classic Miami Vice .

The redheaded Italian had more than enough brawn to back up all that beauty. Power came from a mid-placement 4.9-liter horizontally-opposed 12-cylinder engine that cranked out 380-390 hp and 354 ft.-lbs. of torque, while a 5-speed transmission helped transfer all that power to useable force at the rear wheels, which were shorn with impossibly wide tires. This combination, with the help of a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system, easily produced 0-60 times in the low-5s (5.3 sec.) and overall top speeds of around 185 mph.

And those egg slicer-style grilles down the side of the Testarossa? Well, they don’t just look pretty. Pininfarina, in all its genius, created the vents as functioning induction ports serving up power-saving cool air to the mid-placement engine located just behind the seats.

Considering that the going rate for a later Ferrari model, like the show-stopping 512 TR, can be upwards of $200,000+, collectors might find Testarossas from the 80s, or the 1991 model shown here, to be a steal in the $60,000-120,000 range, which is a common price at auctions today.
