1967 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere GTX

A trend setter in the glorious muscle car revolution of the ‘60s, the mid-size Belvedere GTX was available with either the Super Commando 440 or 426 Street Hemi engine. Built at Chrysler’s Marine/Industrial Division plant, the Hemi engine was constructed to exacting standards and was known for its smooth running, despite mega doses of adrenalin and a hearty appetite for premium gasoline.

The Hemi GTX engine, fed by two massive four-barrel carburetors, produced an inspiring 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, not to mention 490 pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. It was capable of zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at 105 mph – not bad for a car that could be driven to the cinema or grocery story with little difficulty.

In terms of creature comforts, a 150 mph speedometer and bucket seats were standard on the GTX, along with an assortment of colors. Of the 12,500 GTX models built in 1967, 720 were ordered with Hemi engines. Of those, 313 came with four-speed transmissions, while the others came with automatic transmissions.

There’s no mistaking the sound of a Hemi engine from this era, which probably helps to explain why so many people – those who grew up in the same time period and those much younger – dream some day of owning one of these pavement pounders.

I remember the first time I saw and, more importantly, heard a Hemi. I was a high school junior walking to class when one of the “cool” guys in school lumbered into the parking lot driving a new 1967 Dodge Hemi Belvedere GTX.

I remember the ferocious sound of the car, the cacophony of its high-lift cam and solid lifters, and the lumbering exhaust, as it arrived. At first, I thought it was badly in need of tuning. The Hemi engine, with its characteristic melody – imagine machine-gun fire – sounded as if it were ready to jettison from the car and orbit the earth.

Never mind that the driver of this incredible piece of machinery had managed to convince his mom to buy him a pound-paving Hemi when the rest of us were forced to drive our parent’s sanitized four-door buggies.

Later, after owning a succession of muscle cars, I wondered what became of this car, which today is the dream of many car enthusiasts.
