THE UNDERGROUND DREAM GARAGE

The owners of this dream garage wanted to create a special place for their growing collection of performance automobiles with the same warmth and casual elegance that inspired their recently completed Tuscan style home, but without expanding the building's footprint.

They turned to architect Tim Wilson , whose solution was a 2000 square foot subterranean space that forms the foundation of the residence, tucked away and secure, with natural light brought in through the use of light wells and a custom-designed glass garage door.

The garage lair was engineered with no interior columns to achieve the flexibility of multiple parking configurations without having to navigate around structural obstacles.

Wilson's concept for the interior was to incorporate the materials and handcrafted textures used throughout the residence to create a dynamic contrast between the sleek lines of the modern cars with the warmth of natural stone, reclaimed Roman bricks, wooden beams, and the hand-troweled plaster of the architecture.

This juxtaposition allows the cars to be displayed as sculptures within the space. Contemporary low voltage cable lighting was introduced to feature the cars and artwork and is easily adjusted to accommodate their evolving arrangements. The cars can be admired, yet ready to go at a moment's notice.
